Introduction to Sociology/Culture : Ethnocentrism & Cultural Relativism

Summary

 Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism are both viewpoints how to understand other country's culture. This article includes definition and additional explanations, examples of Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism.
  According to article, Ethnocentrism has feature that view as own sights of country itself, and happens to all society. Sociologists say Ethnocentrism is one of attitudes that value or evaluate other society's culture. Also, people who fall into Ethnocentrism think their culture, language, customs, etc are more important than others and get an advantage. With didn't acknowledge cultural difference, their opinions are known as prejudice and egoism. It means, most sociologists think Ethnocentrism don't contribute good things to society.
  On the other hand, this article says that Cultural Relativism is attitude of understanding culture from whole symbolic perspective. In contents, certain language or words like slang are suggested to examples of Cultural Relativism. These examples show that 'certain' societies' words or customs are understanding in that 'certain' society.

   Naturally, I learned about definition of Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism through this article.
  I am interested in evaluative feature of Ethnocentrism, so search more additional things. As a result now I know Cultural toadyism has evaluative feature like Ethnocentrism, and that is different to Ethnocentrism in the way that likable culture is other country's culture.
  Also, I think that article has not enough explanation about Cultural Relativism, so I cannot understand well. Through more searching, I can understand clear about 'Cultural Relativism'. According to searching, most Sociologists think Cultural Relativism is most desirable viewpoint about culture because of laying stress on understanding culture, cultural diversity. But Extreme Cultural Relativism is limitation of Cultural Relativism, its example is honor-killing in Islam.

  Most sociologists think Cultural Relativism is most desirable attitude for culture and society. But it also has limitation named Extreme Cultural Relativism.

  Then, what is most desirable attitude, viewpoint for great culture and society?

  1. I think culture relativism is the most desirable perspective. Without extreme, respecting people's life, it will be a attitude that acceptable to whole world. And it is interesting that your summary section is similar with mine.

  2. In my opinion, the most desirable attitude is depending on situation. For example, When sociologist study other culture, he has to be cultural relativist. But some group want indepence from other country, he may keep ethnocentrism. So I think ultimatly desirable attitude is impossible.
