Introduction to Sociology - Culture

1. Summary
When we talk about culture, we think culture is less nature (our biology and genetics) than nurture (our environment and surroundings that also shape our identities). Because biological nature does not determine our individuality but our surroundings do. That's why we need culture which is the non-biological or social aspects of human life. As we study on 'Culture', many researchers including anthropologists define meaning of culture simply two ways. Firstly, in a narrow sense, it is being advanced by mentally and physically as 'High culture'. Secondly, in a broad sense, culture is the lifestyle in society. And there are many different perspectives on understanding culture such as subcultures, countercultures, ethnocentrism and cultural relativism.

2. My opinion
Among the various aspects of culture, I was interested in ethnocentrism. Because it can be degenerated nationalism or imperialism. So, if I have an opportunity to study ethnocentrism more detail, I want to research about examples of ethnocentrism like Sinocentrism.

3. Questions

Professor Pitor, what do you think the important point we care about when we research different cultures?

I agree that social environment forms a culture, to make our identity.
