Introduction to Sociology/Culture

high culture

It is the culture of an upper class such as an aristocracy or an intelligentsia , but it can also be defined as a repository of a broad cultural knowledge, a way of transcending the class system. The term is contrasted with popular culture or mass culture and also with folk culture, but by no means implies hostility to these.
Arnold defined culture as "the disinterested endeavour after man's perfection" and He saw high culture as a force for moral and political good, and in various forms this view remains widespread, though far from uncontested.

I wonder why there is a class of culture. I think that the reason is that culture difference which were in existence in a hierarchical society still remains.

Today, There are many high-quality movies. mass culture is really lower than high culture do?

  1. I thinks so , too. Mass culture is developed, the upper boundary of the culture seems to have disappeared.

  3. I think difference in class of culture is from accessibility. It can be from money, environment, region, etc.
