In ‘200 pounds beauty’, the main character was a closet singer who sings behind the stage. She was very ugly and fat so she could not show herself to anyone else. Later after she was compared her appearance with the other singer, she decided to have a plastic surgery. The surgery was successful and she became very pretty. No one recognized her and a new life started from then. Not only could she sing on the stage but also the reaction of people was different from her past days. She did not have to hide behind the stage anymore and she became a famous star in a short period of time. Although she had the same ability of singing before and after the surgery, her situation was completely changed just because of her appearance.

   This movie is satirizing lookism discrimination. In our society many people judge others by their appearance on these days. As anonymity increases we don’t have so much attention to each other. Also we don’t have long enough time to know about each other because we move often and a lot for better jobs and environment. These conditions lead us to judge others quickly by the way they look.     I went to Seoul and took the subway, line No. 5 with my friends about a month ago. We visited several places around Chongno3-ga and Gwanghwamun stations. One of the most impressive places for me was the Cheonggye creek.

The former president, Mr. Lee decided to recover the creek when he was the mayor of Seoul. At first, many people strongly opposed to his plan because it would take lots of time and money. However, Mr. Lee thought recovering the creek would be good for the citizens environmentally. With his great resolve and effort the Cheonggye creek has been finally opened to the public.

   It was Sunday afternoon when we visited there and there were a lot of people. The creek was quite clean and there were lots of trees and grasses growing around there. There were also many bridges and a small waterfall. People were talking each other and taking pictures there. Most of them looked happy and seemed to enjoy their weekend. When we were walking along the path there were people who were conducting a survey. We answered the questionnaire and hoped that survey help to make the Cheonggye creek a better place. We had a pleasant time there and it was wonderful enough to make a good memory with my friends. From this experience I could have a chance to think the environment more. The recovery of the Cheonggye creek has been a really successful work for both human and our environment.

The video was about global warming. Because of the global warming, we can see with our naked eye that ice on the peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro is melting every single year. Therefore, lots of people are investigating about the snow and the ice. Also, if there are more carbon dioxide, the temperature gets warmer because it traps the heat. And more, hurricane is the warning of global warming. In addition, flooding and drought is increasing.

Global warming is like a vicious circle. Originally, ice bounces the sunlight but global warming melt lots of ice so the water absorbs the sunlight and the water gets warm and it holds the heat. If the temperature on the equator changes only a degree, it would change each pole twelve degrees. Therefore, it would make the situation worse.

Because of the global warming, lots of virus increased. Also, loss of species got thousand time faster than before. The experts saw that coral leaves were drying. Durkheim's theory is that the society changes very fast so the norm couldn't follow the speed of society. In addition, the values couldn't be right in the position. Also, the old norm and the new norm could make the problem so the deviance can happen. 
 The Merton's is that for the people, there are only cultural aim and no institutional means. Therefore, because of unbalance, people have the deviance.

 Moreover, there are lots of specific deviance. For example, youth smoking is one of them. Youth are prohibited to smoke but they think it's cool and they want to do what the adults say no. So they smoke and it is a deviance.

Socialization makes individuals to have knowledge and experience when they are in the social situations and they behave in proper ways. Also, people recognize other's expectation by their attitude and they learn each other's value and norm. Socialization works everyday before people die. However, it concentrates in the childhood.

 Socialization develop individual's social skills and make people to participate in the society. People interact each other with communications.

 There are anticipatory socialization and re-socialization in socialization. Anticipatory socialization is like doing something before the big socialization works. For an example, a woman going to a place where she can learn how to take care of babies is an anticipatory socialization. Re-socialization is a work that people learn again to adapt the changed society. For example, and old man studying computers may be a re-socialization.

     "Religion" is a system to induce people's behavior and make their livings worthy. Also it combines people as a moral community. There are some general properties of religion. First, it can be an object or symbol that people fear God. Secondly, people have ceremonies to fear God. Last of all, people regularly do the ceremonies in group to show their belief.

     Before looking the religion with structural-functional and social-conflict view, there are some functions about religion. The personal function of the religion makes someone's life meaningful and shows the right way. Also, it can make people safe and calm psychologically. In addition, religion can give the answer about the fundamental problems. Furthermore, we can find the social function of the religion, too. The religion shows the common value and rules to integrate the community. Also, they control deviation and maintain the society. Moreover, it influence people's attitude, behavior, and more.

     There are lots of ways to look the religion and from now on, let's look at the "religion" with Structural-Functional and Social-Conflict view.

     Structural-Functional view the religion as a union.  It makes people together in moral community. Also, religion makes each people sense of belonging and make their relationships tight. On the other hand, Social-Conflict view the religion as a means that makes the present situation reasonable. There could be something must be change in the society but by using the word "Religion", they are just stable.

     I think religion is very powerful in this society. Also, it is one of the important thing that exist in this society. I was very interested that there were lots of ways to view the religion. lol

  Sociologcial theory is very important in Sociology. There has to a theory for sociologists to explain what's happening in this society. Therefore, to explain this phenomena, sociological theories  have to be more than one concept. For example, Putnam's theory which is "The more television people watch, the lower their involvement in civic life will be." shows that he used more concepts than one. Sociological theory is developed into various levels. It can fit in large scale of studies and small ones too. Furthermore, by looking at Putnam's theory, we can find out that only the data can't be informative and helpful. Sociological theory has to consider data and social life relationship.

  Moreover, structural-functionalism and  conflict theory are two of sociological theories.

 Structural-functionalism is a theory that society is similar with organism. The society do the work individually with various components. Structural-functionalism depend each other for society to maintain. Therefore, this theory is hard to explain the change of society  and it could be a weapon for ruling classes to maintain their power.

 Conflict theory is that the "conflict" have to exist for the society to develop. Ruling and unruling classes conflict each other because scarcity value is limited. In addition, the rules that society have right now must be chaged because it is the rule that ruling classes. However, the conflict theory only thinks the society as a ruling and unruling. The society is more complex than that idea.

 I also think society needs sociological theory to understand more clearly. Also, if we have this base, we can accept and critize the society to develop more. On the other hand, if we think the society only with theory frame, we cannot think more creatively. There could be other theories because the era changes with lots of development. Furthermore, I was very interested about the part that combining the data and social life to know the theory. I didn't think about that, I only thought all the data we have could be a theory too. However, I think "relationship" is important in sociological theory.

 It was my first time to do your assignment. Frankly to say, I think the readings in the Wikipedia is a little bit hard but it was very helpful to us to know about the Sociology. Also, there were lots of examples for us to understand. Therfore, when I summarize it, I inferred the example and made into my words. (I made the main idea that what I think.) It is okay for me to summarzie by inferring the examples?

 Last of all, I think sociological theory is very important to know this complicated society.
