Introduction to Sociology/Family

Summary

  Family is group that contains at least two people, and has marriage, blood relative, and adoption relationship. It is most general conception in the world, and it is mediator of individuals and society. Definition and features of family are relative, and its change over time : traditional family and modern family have difference in its features.
  Social functions of family are reproduction of social members, bringing up and protection, socialization, and retriction of sexual desire. Also, some functions existed before are assigned to other institutions like school and welfare centers.
  Today, as society develops more and more, forms of family also develop more and more, and variably. There appear one parent households, cohabitation, childfree and same-sex unions. These some certain and special forms of family recognize and become more general thing in modern society.

Learned Items, Opinion

  Example of special family forms, especially same-sex unions are surprise to me. Today, almost countries dislike them and have some bad awareness. But same-sex unions and other special forms belong to family forms in sociologically. So, I think we have to change our awareness and get positive sight to them.
